What to expect
The Sani Pass road is one of southern Africa's great birding routes, climbing from mist-belt forest and grassland at its base to alpine plateau at the summit — an entire stack of habitats in a single day.
Targets along the way include Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier), Drakensberg Rockjumper, Drakensberg Siskin, Ground Woodpecker, Sentinel Rock Thrush and a host of grassland and highland specials, with the species list shifting through the seasons.
